The export insurance that comes with your white plates runs for 14 days. Sometimes that is not enough: the registration or import procedure in the destination country takes longer, you are waiting for an inspection, an appointment or documents, the transport is delayed, or the buyer is not ready yet.

In those cases we can extend the cover. You do not need to come to the desk for it.

When an insurance extension makes sense

An extension is meant for a vehicle that needs to stay insured while it waits or travels, usually abroad. Request it in good time, before the current cover ends, so that the new period follows on directly. Without valid insurance the vehicle may not be driven.

Five steps to extending the export insurance

  1. You send the request through the form, by WhatsApp or by e-mail. At the desk in Hengelo it is possible too.
  2. We check the request and ask the insurer for approval.
  3. We confirm the approval and the price to you.
  4. You pay by bank transfer.
  5. You usually receive the new insurance certificate with the Green Card by e-mail within 15 minutes of payment, as a PDF.

We give no time for the check and the insurer's approval. If the insurer does not agree, you pay nothing, because payment only follows the confirmation. At the desk, you usually take the Green Card with you within 15 minutes.

It does not matter where the current insurance was arranged: if it was taken out elsewhere, we can extend it with a follow-on policy, after the insurer agrees.

Good to know

  • Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
  • Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
  • Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
  • The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
  • Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Details we need to extend your insurance

  • the registration number;
  • the current Green Card or policy, as a photo or PDF;
  • the end date of the current cover;
  • the country where the vehicle is now and its destination;
  • the details of the policyholder and the driver.

What extending the insurance does not change for the export kenteken

An extension concerns the insurance only. On Dutch public roads, you may drive for 14 days after the deregistration and never longer than the APK (the Dutch periodic roadworthiness test) is valid. That stays the same, and the export kenteken itself is not extended. The full explanation is on the page about how long Dutch export plates are valid.

Is the vehicle still in the Netherlands after the 14 days? Then it can only be moved on a trailer or a car transporter. Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is apply, and they differ from country to country, as our guide to driving abroad on Dutch export plates explains. Check them before you drive on after the first 14 days. The policy and the Green Card state in which countries and for which driver you are covered.

Cover already expired: a late insurance extension

If the old cover has already ended, an extension may still be possible, for example when the vehicle has a valid APK or technical inspection, and again only after the insurer agrees. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is not insured and must not be driven.

Each extension costs from €120 for 14 days, including VAT where applicable; heavy or unusual vehicles can cost more, and the price is always confirmed first. In some cases a discount is possible for several vehicles or a long-term working relationship, always agreed in advance. More about the cover itself is on the page about insurance for Dutch export plates.

Extending export insurance: common questions

Can the cover be extended a second or third time?

Yes, by 14 days each time, and each time only after the insurer agrees. We cannot promise that the insurer will agree.

My export insurance was arranged by another company. Can you extend it?

Yes. We can extend the cover by 14 days with a follow-on policy, after the insurer agrees. Send us the current Green Card or policy and its end date.

Does extending the insurance give me more time on Dutch roads?

No. The 14 days on Dutch public roads and the APK limit stay the same, and the export kenteken itself is not extended. A vehicle still in the Netherlands after 14 days can only be moved on a trailer or car transporter.

My cover ran out yesterday. Is it too late to extend?

An extension can still be possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK or technical inspection, again after the insurer agrees. Between the end of the old cover and the start of the new one, the vehicle is not insured and must not be driven.

How do I send a photo of my Green Card?

Use the WhatsApp button for photos and documents next to the form, or send it by e-mail. The form itself has no upload field.
