A vehicle on an export kenteken needs insurance for the drive: the RDW (the Dutch vehicle authority) requires it for the export drive of cars, vans, motorhomes, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. With us, a caravan or trailer also receives its own export insurance.

At our RDW-recognised export desk in Hengelo, the insurance comes with the white plates. We are not an insurer: we arrange the temporary export insurance through our insurance partner.

What the export plates insurance covers

The export insurance is a temporary third-party liability policy (in Dutch: WA) for 14 days. Third-party liability is about damage you cause to others. The exact cover, the exclusions and the conditions are in the policy, and it is the policy that decides, not this page or our staff.

With the insurance you receive:

  • a Green Card, the international certificate of insurance;
  • an e-mail confirming the insurance, with the Green Card as a PDF;
  • the white export plates: two for a car, one for a motorcycle, scooter, moped, caravan or trailer.

The legal basis in the Netherlands is the Wet aansprakelijkheidsverzekering motorrijtuigen, the Dutch motor liability insurance act.

Read the policy conditions when you receive them, and keep the Green Card with the vehicle papers during the journey.

Who may drive the car on this insurance

Who counts as an insured driver is set by the policy and the Green Card. That is why we ask for the details of both the policyholder and the driver when you apply. If someone else will drive, or you share the driving, tell us before the policy is made. We also ask for the start date you want, your destination and the route.

The Green Card as proof of export cover

The Green Card proves that the vehicle has at least the third-party cover required by law in a visited country, for the countries stated on it. The Green Card system of the Council of Bureaux spans 47 countries, but your own card shows where your cover applies. Always check the card itself before you leave.

Insurance is only one part of driving abroad. Each country also has its own rules for a vehicle on a Dutch export kenteken, including the countries you pass through. Our guide to driving abroad on Dutch export plates explains what to check.

Insurance with plates, without our export document

Already deregistered the vehicle for export elsewhere, for example at an RDW location? Then you can still get the export insurance with white plates from us, without our export document, from €100. We need the start date, your destination and route, and the details of the policyholder and the driver. If you also need the export documents, the complete package starts from €150.

When 14 days of insurance are not enough

Registration at home can take longer than planned, for example while you wait for an inspection or an appointment. The export insurance can then be extended by 14 days at a time, after the insurer agrees, from €120 per extension. That also works if the current insurance was taken out elsewhere. Read how extending the export plate insurance works.

An extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads the limit stays at 14 days after the deregistration, never longer than the APK (the Dutch periodic roadworthiness test), and the export kenteken itself is not extended. Abroad, check the rules of the country you are in before you drive on.

Export insurance for caravans, trailers and motorcycles

A motorcycle, scooter or moped gets one white plate and the same 14 days of third-party cover. A caravan or trailer also receives its own export insurance with us. Up to 750 kg, the insurance is issued on the trailer's chassis number and the white plate shows the number of the towing vehicle; above 750 kg, the caravan or trailer has its own registration. The details per vehicle are on the page about export plates for a motorcycle, motorhome or trailer.

Price of the export insurance and plates

Export plate insurance: what drivers ask

Are you the insurer?

No. We arrange the temporary export insurance through our insurance partner. The policy and the Green Card set the terms, including in which countries and for which driver the cover applies.

Can a friend drive the car on the export insurance?

That depends on the policy. Who counts as an insured driver is set by the policy and the Green Card, so give us the details of the driver when you apply.

Does the export policy pay for damage to the car I am driving?

The export insurance is third-party liability cover, which is about damage caused to others. What is and is not covered is set out in the policy, so read it before you drive.

I already have export documents from another company. Can I still get plates and insurance?

Yes. The export insurance with white plates is also available on its own, without our export document, from €100.

What happens when 14 days of cover are not enough?

The insurance can be extended by 14 days at a time after the insurer agrees, from €120 per extension. Extending the insurance does not extend the 14 days on Dutch roads.

When do I receive the Green Card?

At the desk you receive it with the plates. We also confirm the insurance by e-mail, with the Green Card attached as a PDF.
